Though much is known about Spanish documentation on Roger van der Weyden’s Deposition at the Museo delPrado, knowledge of the copies made by Michiel Coxcie in the sixteenth century is far sketchier. Reference toSpanish sources points to the existence of three copies made by Coxcie, two of which are held at the Prado (Nos.1893 and 1894). Nothing is known of the third apart from the fact it remained in Spain until the early nineteenthcentury, at which point it was taken out of the country. It was at about this time that the Gemäldegalerie inBerlin purchased a copy of Van der Weyden’s Deposition.
