Abstract

The development of trade in Galicia in the Modern Age suffered from both geographical and legal limitations, including a sparse, ill-kept highway network, rudimentary transport practices, and the persistence of internal customs duties and highway tolls. There were also both long- and short-term socioeconomic obstacles, since trade depended on both demand and the capacity to produce marketable surpluses, both of which were weak in a primarily agrarian Galicia characterized by subsistence farming and low family purchasing power. In short, commerce was structurally weak, antiquated and poorly established at the regional level.
