Abstract

St. Nicholas is one of the most known and loved saints of the Christian Church for being the patron saint of children and young people. Its myth and the Italian city of Bari has been an inseparable couple for over a thousand years, that is, since in 1087 the relics of the bishop of Mira were transferred from present-day Turkey to the capital of Puglia. Over time, a deep bond between the city and its patron has been strengthened, giving life to a symbiotic identity. On the basis of the historical evolution of the cult, this reflection analyzes the exceptional relationship between its localization in Bari and its vast diffusion in the East and in the West. The main objective of the research is to investigate old and new geographical dynamics linked to the cult of Santo di Mira and to pilgrimage, whose cultural and socio-economic impacts continue to characterize the territory.
