Abstract

The present paper analyses the relationship between the pilgrimage to St. James and the sea. At first, it underlines the presence of the sea in the pilgrimage symbolism and legends. Secondly, this relationship is verified in at a territorial level by studying the concentration of heritage structures dedicated to the Apostle St. James in Apulia. The choice of this case-study in Southern Italy is due to its long tradition as "middle land" for the pilgrimages of the Christian religion. The results reveal a role of the coast and the sea when creating a “sacred space”.
