Abstract

This article deals with the use of one symbolic element in the Spanish monarchy, from 16th to 19th century. We refer to the depiction of the orb and the two orbs as part of the idea of planetary domain, their integration into the coat of arms of the Bourbon dynasty and its use throughout the reign of Ferdinand VII to reinforce the discourse of loyalty and union among all Hispanic territories. As an epilogue, the text discusses the use of the image by the insurgents in Mexico to mark the independence from Spain.
