This paper examines the works of classicist refurbishment carried out in the main churches of Lima by architect and priest Matías Maestro, between 1790 and 1815. With the endorsement of the limeño ecclesiastical hierarchy, Maestro shaped a full aesthetic program, strongly influenced by the crisis of the Ancien Régime. Furthermore, the contrast between the renewed splendor of the cult and the ghost of the Revolution –coming from Europe to South America– promoted a providential reading of the city’s architectural renovation.
