Abstract

This paper examines the role played by images circulating between the Old and the New World during the time of colonization and in the forging of identity in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The examples wich account for visualization strategies employed to achieve the objectives of the “noble art of painting”, namely, God, misionary work and conversion, as well as the status of being a liberal art and “science”, confirm the presence of European iconic-figurative models that upon arrival to the New World, were adapted to original needs and expressions in order to serve new objectives and realities.
