Abstract

Among the most outstanding pieces of the Quitenian sculpture of the 18th Century is the Transition or Transit of the Virgin, a sculptural work belonging to the collection of the Carmelite Monastery Carmen Alto in Quito. The seventeen images forming the piece show the finest technique used in carved wood and polychrome with brush. History explains that this piece of sculpture was formed within time. The ones in charge of it were the nuns of the monastery but more so the brotherhood supported the cult and celebration of the Transition because they needed this representation fortheir practices.
