Abstract

Migration and education are two interconnected phenomena in today's society in any region of the world. Both are included as priorities in the 2030 Agenda, approved by the United Nations (UN) in 2015. This action plan specifies 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including quality education (SDG 4).

This paper addresses migration in the current context through the prism of the 2030 Agenda, with the aim of approaching the knowledge of the reality of these population flows, and the challenges faced by education in a changing, accelerated context dominated by misinformation, a breeding ground for hate speech against migrants.

Disinformation generates a universe of parallel realities and concepts that can be used to perpetuate narratives about migration. The overabundance of information links disinformation to decontextualization and the sectarian interests of various actors. Disinformation is a multidimensional phenomenon that transcends hoaxes and fake news via the internet. Hate speech against vulnerable audiences is recognized as a serious problem for integration and respect for diversity. The rise of this type of narrative has been reinforced by the expansion of social media, where it has been shown to act as a mechanism for the propagation of crimes against migrants and refugees, two of the main groups affected.

The role of education in this framework, from a focus on sustainability and global citizenship, is not only a tool that facilitates digital and media competence, but also a means to make fundamental rights, equity, equality, and the right to education itself effective, facilitating the construction of a critical and committed citizenship.
