Abstract

Mass media are one of the main agents in the creation, spreading, amplification and legitimacy of migration’s social discourse. In order to study otherness from migration and development aid’s mass media representation we will focus on the expressions that polarize such discourse.

On one hand, us, the West, saviors, host society and Aid donors. On the other hand, the others, split into two groups: economic, irregular and criminalized migrants vs. refugees, vulnerable and passive agents who deserve aid and asylum.

By relating the ‘Routine is fantastic’ campaign (ACNUR, 2014) with the Aquarius’ rescue and the French Spiderman, we will analyze the legitimization of the mass media’s discourse on otherness that supports the social order and justifies discriminatory practices that increase social rejection.
