Abstract

Thanks to the use of the information recorded in the Register of inhabitants of Tenerife of 1779, regarding the ages, gender and professions of the inhabitants who lived in the main rural areas of the island at the end of the 18th century, we have been able to analyse the rates of child labour activity, the age of entry into the work force and the occupational structure of those under 16 years of age. Likewise, the information contained in the register referring to domestic groups has also allowed a deeper understanding of the composition, size and socioeconomic position of the rural families that in 1779 declared using child labour. The extension of this type of labour in the rural island landscape has also led us to pay attention to the state of the school network and the registered level of schooling of the children in Tenerife at the end of the Old Regime.
