Abstract
At the end of February 2022, videos allegedly connecting the Ukrainian army to attacks against civilians in the border region of Donbas began to circulate on different social networks and media outlets linked to Russia. The U.S. government had previously warned that Moscow had staged a false flag attack to serve as a pretext to justify its military intervention in Ukraine. This article explores why this pre-warning is unprecedented and whether it has had any effect on how the American and European public has positioned itself with respect to the conflict. It then explores the value that this communicative strategy, referred as "early warning" against disinformation, can have beyond this context.
