Abstract

Humanism has not yet exhausted all the possibilities of interpretation and development. Neither the ancient renaissance or classical vision of humanism nor the more modern positivist or scientific-technical vision fit into the vision of the school of Galician medical humanism. In this paper, after a brief review of the different meanings of humanism throughout history, we place Rof Carballo as one of the pillars of the philosophical vision of medical humanism. To this end, we start from the fact that his work can be divided into three stages rather than into two, the last being eminently philosophical. Finally, we present three notes regarding his philosophical vision of humanism, which lead to defining his medical anthropology, theoretically, in contrast to medical positivism; emotionally, as opposed to Renaissance humanism, and practically, contrary to a merely compassionate attitude.
