Abstract

The aim of this paper is to outline an interpretation of three Pindaric Odes about the foundation of Kyrene: P. 9, P. 4 and P. 5. Taking into account some particular formal problems of these three odes as well as the general fact that a melic poem is in no obvious way a narrative genre, we consider that the essential content of these odes is the polis as it results from, first, the conquer of the woods and the destruction of the goddess or the virgin girl that inhabits it, and, second, an uprooting movement that crystallizes in the figure of the island, i.e. the land that is no land but wanders always in the sea. Finally we make some remarks about the founding act itself, paying attention to the assumptions that make this act difficult to understand for the modern reader.
