Abstract

This article analyzes Rousseau’s role in changing the culture of design in the second half of the eighteenth century. Based on Montesquieu, Robinson Crusoe and the superiority of Ancient over Modern, he opposed to the rococo culture of luxury and adornment an ethical and aesthetical model of rustic nature, produced by the synthesis of the ideals of the Antiquity and the primitive with the peasant world, opening a influential path in the modern world.
