Abstract
The naissance of universities in modern times was linked to the need of the Hispanic Monarchy tohave a professional bureaucracy in all its territories. In 1676 was established in Guatemala City, theRoyal University of San Carlos. The role model was the “claustral” tradition of Salamanca. However, the presence of royal officials in the government of this General Study broke with the traditionof “autonomy” which enjoyed, although diminished, the referents in Salamanca and Mexico. Thereason: increased state intervention in the university and lack of college as a group to defend thatfreedom. This was called to be another kind of corporation than those founded in the sixteenthcentury.
