Abstract

A relevant aspect concerning the development of foreign affairs is how to overcome communicationproblems between speakers/writers of different languages. This is particularly interesting forthe early states in the Near East and the building up of their ‘empires’. Ambassadors, messengers,translators and translations played a significant role that is often overseen. There is a wealth ofdocumentation concerning the building up of the ancient Egyptian empire and the language contactsbetween Egyptians and their neighbours derived from it, which will be partly surveyed in thepresent article
