This paper deals with the imperial experiencies in the west world from a diacronic and comparativeperspective. It begins with the Hispanic case and then it offers some reflexions about empires duringthe 19th century, with some references to the 20th century. The main question revolves around theepistemological status of “empire” as a modern age category in relation to other categories such as“nation” and “state”. Nowadays this question is part and parcel of the intense international debateabout the nature of empires
