Abstract
Manuel Ugarte and José Carlos Mariátegui were, probably, two of the most prominent figures of
the Latin American Left at the beginning of the XX century. A Left whose diversity would generate
signs of all sorts and in differing fields but, through these authors, would penetrate deeply in
two extremely important movements of the continent’s political development: antiimperialism and
indigenism. This article proposes to analyse these thinkers’ influence on said movements, the characteristics of
their thoughts, their vision/idea of the revolution and the reasons why their contributions ended up
being ignored. This work uses a selection from both authors’ works as a source, as well as comments
by their contemporaries andpress reports from the period.
