Abstract

Community radios and TV stations in Argentina have a long and diverse history that goes back four decades, and they are found throughout the country.

Despite its relevance, there are still no complete and reliable data on the amount of active media and their characteristics in the State, universities, or the networks that group them. In an singular work, this article analyzes the community, popular and alternative media currently operative. It is based on an exhaustive two-year empirical research that collected, refined and systematized information from different types of sources.

It is argued that, from 2008, when the public debate of the Audiovisual Law project began, there was an exponential growth in the number of radios and television stations in the social sector in the country. This correlation and previous studies allow us to infer that the legalization and promotion policies established by that norm have a relevant impact on this result.
