Individuals and societies are crossed by emotions and, following a classic sociological principle, the emotional state of a society isn’t the sum of the emotional states of individuals. Sociological theory has been pointing out the importance of emotions in social processes, to varying degrees throughout its history. At the same time, sociology itself seems unable to deal with the emotions empirically. Today, most common social research techniques, focusing especially on the production and analysis of discourses, seem limited to collect emotional states of society, requiring modification or alternative to practical research. The current observational instruments have been developed primarily to rational processes, such as public opinion, values, representations or rationalized discourses.
