Comunicación, cultura y política: de la ‘primera New Left’ a la formación de los estudios culturales británicos (1956 – 1979)

Resumen
El objetivo de este artículo es realizar un recorrido histórico y teórico que permita trazar la genealogía de los estudios culturales británicos a partir del nacimiento de la New Left en la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Se realiza un análisis del contexto político de la naciente sociedad de consumo de posguerra, así como de los desarrollos teóricos que buscaron dar cuenta del cambio cultural favorecido por el aumento de la disposición y acceso a los bienes de consumo, la extensión de la alfabetización, el desarrollo de los medios de comunicación de masas y la proliferación de nuevas formas culturales y estilos de vida. Se exponen las aportaciones fundamentales de E.P.Thompson, Richard Hoggart, Raymond Williams y Stuart Hall, y se detallan los puntos críticos de encuentro y desencuentro que permiten hablar de una ‘primera New Left’ durante el período 1956-1962, así como de un proyecto original de los estudios culturales británicos durante la etapa 1964 – 1979. En última instancia, se expone la naturaleza del debate teórico que conduce a la centralidad, dentro de los estudios culturales, del fenómeno de la significación y la perspectiva semiótica de la cultura como paradigma de análisis de la influencia de los medios de comunicación en la construcción de la realidad social. El artículo concluye con un esbozo de los puntos de inflexión que, en gran medida, permiten entender la ambigüedad de los desarrollos, fundamentalmente teóricos y académicos, de los estudios culturales a partir de 1980, en detrimento de la voluntad popular de la primera etapa.
