Los Años Santos Compostelanos y la recuperación de la modernidad en la arquitectura gallega (1948-1965)

Abstract

The Holy Years celebrated in Santiago de Compostela between 1948 and 1965 were especially important to the recovery of modernist architecture in Galicia, with the advent of a series of projects and events related to the Way of St James in general and the city of Santiago in particular. The projects represented a break with previous approaches, triggering a process of renewal that was developed and came to a conclusion in the decades that followed.
The return to the modernity cut short by the Spanish Civil War and the period of autarky that followed it manifested itself in events such as the lectures held at La Estila halls of residence, with theoretical proposals as Molezún’s lighthouse dedicated to the Apostle, the pilgrims’ hostel by Moreno Barberá and the chapel designed by Oíza, Oteiza and Romany for the Way of St James. It was also a feature of completed architectural projects, such as the conversion of the Hospital de los Reyes Católicos into a hotel, work that was overseen by Moreno Barberá.
