Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyze the professional and personal career of a businesswomen who traded with different cities of the Iberian Peninsula. María Josefa de Lara and her husband ran a textile factory in the city of Antequera. The death of her spouse started a lawsuit that ended up in the Royal Chancery of Granada and a contest of eager creditors. In this work we will analyze the initiatives and resistance carried out by this businesswoman to safeguard her heritage and continue undertaking professionally. For this, we have consulted a wide typological variety of sources of commercial, notarial and judicial information. The main results highlight the legal autonomy of widowed women, their activity in commerce and finance, and their visibility in documentary sources.
