Abstract

During the seventeenth century, the Government of the Philippines developed a close relationship of dependence with the Zheng clan that had an impact on the commerce, economy and society. This symbiosis, based on collaboration, but also on competition, was not without friction, such as that originated in 1662 by the threat of conquest of Luzon by Zheng Chenggong. In this article, we will study how this relationship of dependence was generated and how the changes that emerged in Taiwan, Philippines and in other enclaves of Asia forced a rapid recovery of the ties lost after the 1662 break.
