Abstract

This article studies the evolution of the image of King Philippe IV based on thefuneral and festive discourses during his long reign. We emphasized the ability of this kindof texts in order to keep a fluid relation with others narrative genres us history or mythology.The paper distinguishes two phases. In the first one, the discourses develop the heroic imageof “Philippe the Great” and his own rhetorical space: the prince agonistic theatre. The second one exposes the image of “The pacific King”, the virtuous Prince who governs the kingdom,faithful to the catholic religion.
