Attemps by J. Hajnal and P. Laslett to map the diversity of European household forms in the past have focused on the variations in households forms in very broadly defined European regions. In this paper new data will be used to assess the accuracy of their account of regional variations in European household forms, and also, its evolution between 1750-1950, the English case, and the defining characteristics of family and households systems in the European past.
