The development of the Galician fishing in the last decades of 18th century, thanks, specially, to the presence of the “Catalan fomenters”, originated an important demand of salt that was taken care of mainly by the salt mines of Cádiz. The supplying of salt to the Galician fishing was made by sea by means of Portuguese boats, which supposed more than one hundred naval displacements each year. The hiring was carried out by the Consulado de Portugal in Cadiz, that acted like intermediary between the Administración de Salinas and the patrons of the boats. Nevertheless, the persistent warlike conflicts of this time altered this model of behaviour and made the hiring necessary of neutral boats and they moved the origin of the salt from Cádiz to Setúbal.
