"In the world we have lost". Elderly parents and children in the Westner Galicia at the mid-Eighteenth century
Main Article Content
Abstract
People aged 60 years and over represented a high proportion of the population in the region of Cotobade (Pontevedra, Spain) during the mid-eighteenth century. In addition, they were very actively involved in family and community activities. Therefore, the demographic weight of this aging population as well as their family and social role have been analysed through consultation and crosslinking of different and complementary documentary sources (population censuses, fiscal cadastres, parish records, notarial deeds); similarly, the size, composition and structure of the domestic groups under their leadership are analysed, paying particular attention to the long coexistence between parents and children not only as a fundamental mechanism in the reproduction of domestic groups and peasant exploitation, but also as a factor that influenced inheritance strategies and family support to the elderly.
