Abstract

Public display of the local elites’ power was a decisive factor to perpetuate thesocial status of the nobility in the Spanish Monarchy mandated territories during the EarlyModern Age. The hidalgos of Galicia were a local elite with a great economic, social and political power. So, they made use of the public display of power too, although their differentwealth levels. This public display of power had a symbolic content that consisted of identitysigns and habits with propaganda purpose. It might be recognized by the society in differentcontexts and it allowed a powerful minority to be identified.
