Abstract
In this study, a romantic novel, Amor de perdição (1862) by Camilo Castelo Branco (18251890) and another contemporary one, Casas pardas (1977) by Maria Velho da Costa (1938-), are analyzed from the onomastic point of view so as to show, in two synchronous cuts, the possible diachronic evolution of masculine and feminine proper names as well as the nicknames and hypo- corisms in literary texts. It is concluded that the common sources of the saints are frequently maintained for the use of proper names in both works, whereas the creation of nicknames and hypocorisms was increased in the contemporary novel.
