Abstract

Framing theory studies the different focus media messages can adopt and how events can be conceptualized in the mediated discourse. Through language, mass media “frame” reality and build up the content by selecting specific characteristics and attributes. This process defines what information will be transferred to the general public and, moreover, these messages, mediated and “framed”, are determinant in influencing public opinion. The aim of this paper is to study how the Spanish press media confronted the ‘bailout’ that occurred in Spain in 2012. This investigation attempts to define the key frames and the position adopted in the media coverage regarding the action taken by the Spanish
Government.
