Abstract

Based on a global analysis of the phenomena defined as the expansion of the judiciary, the research sought to define the concepts, causes and origins of studies related to this judicial role since the end of the 20th century. It also sought to analyze the causes and effects of the expansion of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court. From the study of some actions of constitutionality control judged by this Court, it aimed to identify if it has acted within the limits of its competence or if it has gone beyond the law’s application. Finally, despite the fact that this article has only attempted to study just a few constitucional actions, the results obtained confirm, at least in the analyzed cases, the hypothesis according to which the abstract constitutional control serve as an instrument to expand the power of the Supreme Federal Court.
