Abstract

Recent publications on cynicism in the Anglophone world highlight the topicality of a prolific field of study. These publications reflect the same diversification of approaches from which the study of cynicism has been approached during the last thirty years. The aim of this paper will be to problematize and discuss each of these approaches in order to create a classification in the recent literature devoted to cynicism whose origin dates back to the 1987 english translation of Peter Sloterdijk's Critique of Cynical Reason. This paper undertakes a review from the late 1980s to the present day. Thus, we propose to divide the resulting literature into three main approaches taking as a starting point the use (linguistic praxis) made of the controversial concept of cynicism and the cynic as an ancient (philosophical) or contemporary figure.
