Abstract

Spinoza’s concept of conatus has received several interpretations, and the majority of its controversies rests upon the way in which it is applied to certain modes of Nature –specially, the human being–. Problems such as suicide, on the one hand, or the stability of certain subatomic particles, on the other, have seemed to question the integrity of this concept. In this article I will sketch an interpretation that dodges those ambiguities, pointing that this concept is presented in a purely ontological form and, under the shelter of this view, its main difficulties turn spurious.
