Abstract

In this paper, we will focus on the analysis of the little-known critique of David Hume’s theory of virtues held by the father of classical utilitarianism, Jeremy Bentham. We will argue that Hume's viewpoint in that theory, based on the fundamental distinction between natural and artificial virtues, it is not only compatible with classical utilitarianism, despite criticism by Jeremy Bentham, but also proposes a solid, complex and plural vision of morality that proposes.
