Abstract

Much of the elegance of the concept of natural selection lies in a false appearance ofsimplicity and it is commonly described metaphorically. In this paper, I review differentmetaphors of the natural selection with the aim of showing some hidden complexities. Theconcept of natural selection is highly controversial and closely related with other controversialconcepts, such as fitness and adaptation. A discussion on metaphors of natural selectionis important because the image that they evoke may hamper research on the natural process.
