A Categorial Reading of Marx and the Dialectics of Modernity
Main Article Content
Abstract
Following Moishe Postone´s categorial reading, I intend to reconstruct some basic elements regarding a critical theory of modernity in Karl Marx´s thought. This critical theory does not depend on a philosophy of universal history. Instead, the categorical reading bases its claims on a historically specific understanding of the capitalist social nexus. As well, the categorial emphasis on the mutations of social nexus widens the reach of Marxian theory towards a comprehensive understanding of modern society, including the transformations in subjectivity. Capital produces a dual transformation in the social nexus, at once pluralizing and homogenizing the patterns of human interaction. Marx´s thought, which supersedes a theory of class struggle, illuminates these contradictions within modern social nexus.
