Abstract

The article analyzes the most relevant passages where Wittgenstein uses the expression‘form of life’ (Lebensform), establishing connections between its different senses. Then twointerpretations of this notion are examined, that is, the organic and the cultural one, thatsome authors consider excluding each other, and the one-sidedness of both interpretationsis discussed critically. Finally an interpretation which allows to combine trascendentalismand naturalism is proposed. This interpretation deals with the methodological functionattributed by Wittgenstein to the notion of ‘form of life’ in his conceptual analysis of theconditions of linguistic understanding.
