Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show the Socratic influence on the philosophy of Euclid of Megara, against the interpretation that points out the Eleatic influence on his theory. To do this, I will indicate that Euclid’s doctrine exhibits a strong Socratic mark, at least in regard to: his work as a writer of Socratic dialogues, the use of the eristic dialectic, the development of some ethical principles on behavior towards death, self-mastery and the unity of virtue, and the presentation of a metaphysic which places the good in a privileged site. Although this metaphysic goes beyond the Socratic doctrine, it cannot be identified with the principles of the Eleatic philosophy.
