Relations between media and politics: from the political function to the mediatization of conflict

Abstract
The present article examines the evolution of the relations between politics and communication in the academic literature of Journalism from the seventies to the present, with the aim of contextualizing the new debates around the journalistic coverage of contemporary political conflicts. The theoretical revision begins with the studies on the political function of the press and continues with the transformations experienced by the political system as a consequence of the irruption of television. It also addresses the discussion that has taken place among European academics around the new concept of mediatization, it recovers theories about the propagandistic use of the media and offers an overview of the impact of mediatization on political conflicts.
