Abstract

The creation of the naval dockyard in Ferrol halfway through the 18th century created such an important demand for workers that to meet in the Crown had to resort to exceptional measures. To swell the ranks of the dockyard workers a large number of subjects from the kingdom of Galicia and beyond were sent to the Ferrol installations under duress. At the same time, marginalized elements of the society (gypsies, convicts and layabouts) were rounded up and sent to do the most unpleasant jobs in the dockyards and, according to the principles of Enlightened thought, were turned into honest men.
