Through his own biography and his political and historical works, this article analyses the ideas about Castile and Spain expressed in the books of the Catalan writer Antoni de Capmany (1742-1813). Focusing on history, Capmany made a comparison between the evolution of Castile and Spain and the singularity of Catalonia's case. Capmany's political project for Spain had been seriously influenced by the Spanish wars that took place at the beginning of the XIXth century, by the pressing of liberal theories and by some biased interpretations made by a part of the historiography.
