Abstract

Literacy levels are treated researching a rural region of Galicia through the signatures written in notarial, demographic and tax sources. After testing the increase of literacy levels during the period, has been demonstrated a relationship between people who know how to sing, higher family incomes, larger household size, population territorial distribution, proximity to main routes and schooling centres. Low literacy degrees are imputed to an unequal distribution of country wealth.
