Emigration and one-heir families characterise the Massif Central. In West Cantal durin the period 1700-1900, migrations predominantly to Spain- tend to take place several times a year (seasonal migrations to suit companies needs/ seasonal work migrations). In what way does the lack of a masculine presence shape inheritance standars? This study was conducted from the family and genealogical archives of seven homes. In 50% of cases, the oldest child is chosen as heir; 60% of heirs are women; 2/3rds of heiresses marry migrants in Spain; the setting up of younger children seems to be difficult, etc; professional activities and family patrimony are linked.
