Abstract

This article analizes the presence of Guipuzcoan whale boats –mainly from Orio and Zarauz- in the whale fisheries of the Galician and Asturian coasts, during the 16th and 17th centuries. The reseach is structured in tree blocks: The first one analizes the early development of the basque whailing campaign in the Cantabric Sea, during the Late Middle Ages. The second one studies organization aspects related to the whailing activity. Finally, it shows a diachronic evolution of the whailing activity, dealing in depth with the study of measures (or decisions) adopted by the basque to face new situations.
