A new vocabulary and method of research were employed by Spanish historians during the last quarter of the Seventeenth Century. It was based on probabilism, and it was used either to reaffirm or to deny the historical bases of both the founding myths of the territories of the Monarchy, and the discourses which gave support to the Monarchy. The debate on the founder of the Spanish Monarchy has been taken as an example of the way in which this method has been adopted.
