This paper has a twofold aim. On the one hand, it gives a general view of the tax returns to the Crown from each of the three Basque Provinces throughout the Ancient Regime, as well as highlighting the differences among them. On the other, it seeks to locate the origin of the Basque Provincial Treasuries precisely in those royal tax demands which, at the same time, marked the pace of their development throughout the XVII and XVIII centuries until a wider homogeneity was achieved in the following century.
