Abstract

This essay summmarizes the bibliopraphical contributions made in three defined periods: befote 1980, between 1980 and the commemoration of the Fifth Centenary in 1992 and from that event to our days about internacional marine comerce through the Cantabrian ports. This bibliographical review allows show the remarkable advances experienced in the knowledge and the persistence of deficiencies not always due to the sources but to the dynamics of investigations that not obey to preconceived strategic plans. General visions and sectorial studies are needed. The regional distribution of the knowledge is unequal and the knowledge on the mercantile communities is almost incipient. Although in not object of this paper, also emphasizes the reduced production on a important question for international marine trade: navigation and transport.
