Abstract

The diocese of Calahorra and la Calzada forms a network of parishes and a heterogeneous beneficiary system. This is a product of both its formation as a diocese in the medieval period and of the socio-economic diversity in which the clergy carried out its pastoral work. The following paper deals first of all with the formation and configuration of the diocesan structure which determines the structure of the network of parishes. Secondly, the variations in the demand for religious services and their impact on the number of places of worship and clergy are analyzed. Finally, a study is made of the true characteristics of service at the time of the Council of Trent, taking into account the degree of non-attendance, the accumulation of earnings and the levels of income dependent on the beneficiary category of each church member.
